Paid Weekly, Rent Due Monthly: A Worked Budget for a $720 Weekly Paycheck

Weekly pay has a real advantage: money arrives often, so a bad week is never far from the next payday. The catch is that rent and most bills are monthly. The trick is to turn every monthly bill into a weekly set-aside, so each Friday's paycheck carries its fair share and the bills are waiting when they come due.

Step 1: Turn monthly bills into weekly amounts

There are 52 Fridays a year, so a monthly bill costs (monthly amount × 12 ÷ 52) per week. Round up to the next dollar.

BillMonthlyWeekly set-aside
Rent$1,200$277
Other bills (phone, utilities, insurance, internet)$600$139
Total$1,800$416

Step 2: Split what is left of each $720 paycheck

$720 minus $416 in set-asides leaves $304 for the week.

EnvelopePer week
Groceries$110
Gas$60
Household$25
Fun$35
Savings$50
Buffer$24
Total$304

The flexible envelopes (groceries, gas, household and fun) total $230 for seven days: about $32 a day.

Step 3: Give the rent envelope a small cushion

Most months have four Fridays, but usually four months a year have five. With $277 a week, a four-Friday month collects $1,108 for rent, which is $92 short; a five-Friday month collects $1,385, which is $185 over. Over a year it evens out, but four-Friday months can come three in a row (February, March and April 2026 did), which leaves the envelope $276 short. Starting the rent envelope with about $300 covers that, and the five-Friday months refill it.

The same idea applies to the other bills envelope on a smaller scale. If you don't have the cushion yet, put the buffer envelope toward it for the first few weeks.

Step 4: Know what a fifth Friday is (and isn't)

With this method, a five-Friday month is not a bonus. The set-asides from the extra Friday are what refill the rent and bill envelopes after the four-Friday months, and the rest of that paycheck pays for that week's groceries and gas like any other week. The extra money shows up as a fuller rent envelope, which is exactly what keeps the cushion intact. The three-paycheck months tool shows which months have five paydays when you pick weekly pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I budget weekly pay when rent is monthly?

Set aside a fixed amount from every weekly paycheck for rent: monthly rent × 12 ÷ 52. In this example $1,200 rent becomes $277 a week.

Why isn't the weekly rent amount just rent divided by 4?

A year has 52 weeks, not 48. Dividing by 4 sets aside $300 a week, more than needed; dividing by 4.33 gives the real average.

Why do I need a cushion in the rent envelope?

Months with four Fridays collect less than a full month's rent, and they can come three in a row. A cushion of about $300 covers the shortfall until a five-Friday month refills it.

How many months have five paychecks with weekly pay?

Usually four a year, sometimes five, depending on the payday and the year.
